I've been pouring through hundreds job ads as I've assessed construction project management positions. It might be a nice to have but is most certainly not a requirement to have one. It's not going to provide a tremendous amount of value (your analysis shows someone with no certs overlapping with PMP on payscale per construction industry). PMP is not a universal cert in construction project management. And I agree with the previous post about working backwards from where you want to be later in your career I started as an assistant PM and worked my way up from there. The big GC's definitely excel at that, but you can find a smaller GC capable of this as well. I don't know your situation, but I highly recommend finding a company willing and able to train you well. Coursera has some course offerings for cheap, as does Perdue and some other universities, but really any class is probably going to teach you something. Even then, I don't have a degree in anything related to construction and I've gotten multiple offers during my recent job hunt. If you want to learn something, I recommend taking some online classes, but don't expect a pat on the back for it unless you are going for a new degree. LEED certs only help if you are a designer really, otherwise you are just following the spec section of the plans and applying your, you guessed it, experience. Get a CCM when you have more experience.Īn OSHA cert is totally practical, but that's something you will apply with experience.

She achieved fame with her PMP prep books and does a series of videos that works through that in a way that ought to provide not just some good PMP prep but also how that gets applied in project delivery. For a more cohesive set of videos, try the late Rita Mulcahy. The above are just a couple of items that suggest some of what you'll find. It's just good, clear content and well presented. You can also find someone on YouTube that matches your style: some like straight info - just the facts - and others like more analogies and visuals. I know it's a bit ore work than, for example, Lynda (which has some really good content), but it's a pay-for-course service and might not be available. One or two of those courses will introduce topics which you'll likely want more detail on and do searches for those. You'll need to do some work but if you start with 'Project Management Fundamentals' or similar you'll find a swag of content Be a pessimist in planning and then cheerlead your team to execute like you’re saving the world. So throw whoever planned the project under the bus (especially if that was YOU) and get it right the next time around. Many times falling short is due to the stunning inability to apply Murphy’s Lawn in the planning/proposal phase. There are legitimate reasons why this doesn’t happen sometimes, and you need to scrutinize those excuses, I mean reasons, more harshly then your customer or your boss. Bottom line is that if you deliver what the customer expects when they expect it for the expected cost, you’re doing well. You’d be surprised at how many PM’s fail because they fail to do the basics.
Better, faster, cheaper - you can do one, maybe two of those but never three (unless you’re making genuine technological breakthroughs). You might even be better off coming in untouched by the formal training and simply being the jerk in the room who makes sure scope is sufficiently defined and then monitors your costs and refusing to accept unsatisfactory excuses for being late.
The methods are just the how-to of doing that. Focus fanatically on the definition of, trade-offs among, and execution of cost, scope, and schedule. You’re in the right place it’s right here.
